Adopted name of Cornelius McGillicuddy (1862-1956)
US baseball manager. With the establishment of the American League 1901, he invested his own money in the Philadelphia Athletics (“A’s”) and became the team’s first manager. In his record 50 years with the team 1901–51, he led them to nine American League pennants and five World Series championships.
Born in East Brookfield, Massachusetts, US, Mack began his professional baseball career as a catcher 1883 and became player-manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates 1894.
He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame 1939.
