Annual Old World plant Lens culinaris of the pea family Leguminosae. The plant, which resembles vetch, grows 15–45 cm/6–18 in high and has white, blue, or purplish flowers. The seeds, contained in pods about 1.6 cm/0.6 in long, are widely used as food.
The most common varieties are the grayish French lentil and the red Egyptian lentil.
Obezbeđuje dovoljnu količinu proteina, naročito ako se jede u kombinaciji sa cerealijama. Bogato je biljnim vlaknima koja regulišu probavu i raznim mineralima, a sadrži malo masti. Sočivo snižava nivo holesterola, a pripremljeno sa aromatičnim travama i začinima ima antiejdžing efekat (usporava starenje).
