(1819-1909) English painter. His canvases depict large contemporary scenes featuring numerous figures and incidental detail. Ramsgate Sands 1854 (Royal Collection, London), bought by Queen Victoria, is a fine example, as is Derby Day 1856–58 (Tate Gallery, London).
