Žitarica od čijih zrna se mlevenjem dobija ukusno i zdravo brašno bogato flavonoidima, koji su vrlo jak tonik za kapilare, zatime belančevinama, mastima, vitaminima, fosforom, gvožđem, kalcijumom, jodom, cinkom, organskim kiselinama i vitaminima.
Višegodišnja biljka sa uskim ili kopljastim listovima na dugim drškama. Koren mu je vretenast, a slabo razgranato stablo može da dosegne visinu i do 150 cm.
Pitomo zelje je otporno na hladnoću, nije zahtevno što se zemljišta tiče, ali ipak najbolje uspeva na rastresitom. Jedino ima veću potrebu za vlagom. Česte berbe i zakidanje cvetonosnog stabla podstiču razvoj novih listova, pa je u tom slučaju i prinos i kvalitet listova bolji.
Seje se u martu ili u jesen, krajem septembra. Za jelo valjaju samo mladi listovi. Šteta što ovog povrća nema češće na našim trpezama, jer je prepuno vitamina, a uz to od njega mogu da se spremaju ukusna jela.
