Grand Prix motor-racing team formed by John Cooper (1923–). They built Formula Two and Formula Three automobiles before building their revolutionary rear-engined Cooper T45 in 1958.
Jack Brabham won the 1959 world title in a Cooper and the team won the Constructor's Championship. Both Brabham and Cooper retained their titles the following year. However, other rear-engined automobiles subsequently proved more successful and in 1968 Cooper left Formula One racing.

(1789-1851) US writer, considered the first great US novelist. He wrote about 50 novels, mostly about the frontier, wilderness life, and the sea. He is best remembered for his Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels: The Pioneers 1823, The Last of the Mohicans 1826, The Prairie 1827, The Pathfinder 1840, and The Deerslayer 1841. All describe the adventures of the frontier hero Natty Bumppo before and after the American Revolution.
Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, son of the wealthy landowner who founded Cooperstown, New York. He grew up in that frontier settlement and after expulsion from Yale sailed as an apprentice seaman in Europe. In 1811 he married the wealthy Susan DeLancey and became a gentleman farmer, achieving success as a writer with his novel The Spy 1821. He then moved to New York City, where he became a member of the Knickerbocker Group of writers. Cooper lived and wrote in Europe for seven years before returning to New York 1833 to live in Cooperstown. His many works include The Pilot 1823 (the first American novel of the sea), The Red Rover 1828, and Satanstoe 1845.

(1901-1962) US film actor. He epitomized the lean, true-hearted American, slow of speech but capable of outdoing the “bad guys”. His films include Lives of a Bengal Lancer 1935, Mr Deeds Goes to Town 1936, Sergeant York 1940 (Academy Award), and High Noon 1952 (Academy Award).
In 1960 he received a special Academy Award for his lifetime contribution to cinema.

(Josephine) (1895-1994) New Zealand campaigner for Maori rights, and particularly claims to traditionally held land. By the strength of her intellect and personality, she became the leading voice of the Maori people and the best-known advocate of racial harmony in her country.

English pottery designer. Her style has varied from colorful Art Deco to softer, pastel decoration on more classical shapes. She started her own company 1929, which later became part of the Wedgwood factory, where she was senior designer from 1966.

(1609-1672) English portrait miniaturist. His subjects included Milton, members of Charles II's court, the diarist Samuel Pepys' wife, and Oliver Cromwell.
He departed from the tradition of Hilliard and Oliver in giving the miniature some of the quality of the large oil portrait, being known as a “van Dyck in little”. His contemporaries greatly admired him, and to Aubrey he was “the prince of limners”. His brother Alexander (fl. 1630–60) was also a miniature painter who worked at Amsterdam and at the court of Queen Christina of Sweden.

(Niels) (1930-) US physicist who in 1955 began work on the phenomenon of superconductivity. He proposed that at low temperatures electrons would be bound in pairs (since known as Cooper pairs) and in this state electrical resistance to their flow through solids would disappear. He shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for Physics with John Bardeen and J Robert Schrieffer (1931– ).
Cooper was born in New York, where he attended Columbia University, specializing in quantum field theory—the interaction of particles and fields in subatomic systems. His work with John Bardeen was carried out at the University of Illinois. In 1958 Cooper moved to Brown University, Rhode Island, and in 1978 became director of the Center for Neural Science at Brown.
Whereas the decrease in resistance is gradual in most metals, the resistance of superconductors suddenly disappears below a certain temperature. Experiments had shown that this temperature was inversely related to the mass of the nuclei. Cooper showed that an electron moving through the lattice attracts positive ions, slightly deforming the lattice. This leads to a momentary concentration of positive charge that attracts a second electron. This is the Cooper pair. Although the electrons in the pair are only weakly bound to each other, Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer were able to show that they all form a single quantum state with a single momentum. The scattering of individual electrons does not affect this momentum, and this leads to zero resistance. Cooper pairs cannot be formed above the critical temperature, and superconductivity breaks down.
Developing a theory of the central nervous system, Cooper has also worked on distributed memory and character recognition.
He published The Meaning and Structure of Physics 1968.

(1934-) English heavyweight boxer, the only man to win three Lonsdale Belts outright, 1961, 1965, and 1970. He held the British heavyweight title 1959–71 and lost it to Joe Bugner. He fought for the world heavyweight title but lost in the sixth round to Mohammed Ali 1966.
