(1920-) US physicist whose graduate studies were interrupted by work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. After World War II, working with Italian physicist Emilio Segrč, he discovered the existence of the antiproton. Both scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 1959.

Lord Great In the UK, the only officer of state whose position survives from Norman times; responsibilities include the arrangements for the opening of Parliament, assisting with the regalia at coronations, and organizing the ceremony when bishops and peers are created.

(Wilton Norman) (1936-) US basketball player who set a record by averaging 50.4 points a game during the 1962 season, and was the only man to score 100 points in a game.
He played professionally for the Philadelphia Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, and briefly for the Harlem Globetrotters. Playing against the New York Knickerbockers 1962 he became the only man to score 100 points in a National Basketball Association (NBA) game. He was the only center to lead the league in assists. He led the league in scoring 1960–66, was NBA Most Valuable Player 1960, 1966–68, and retired 1973 after a 13-year career.

(1836-1914) British politician, reformist mayor of and Member of Parliament for Birmingham; in 1886, he resigned from the cabinet over Gladstone's policy of home rule for Ireland, and led the revolt of the Liberal-Unionists.

(Joseph) (1863-1937) British Conservative politician, elder son of Joseph Chamberlain; as foreign secretary 1924–29 he negotiated the Pact of Locarno, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize 1925, and signed the Kellogg–Briand pact to outlaw war 1928.

(Arthur) (1869-1940) British Conservative politician, son of Joseph Chamberlain. He was prime minister 1937–40; his policy of appeasement toward the fascist dictators Mussolini and Hitler (with whom he concluded the Munich Agreement 1938) failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II. He resigned 1940 following the defeat of the British forces in Norway.
In 1938 Chamberlain went to Munich, Germany, and negotiated with Hitler on the Czechoslovak question. He was ecstatically received on his return and claimed that the Munich Agreement brought “peace in our time”. However, Germany advanced against British allies and within a year Britain was at war.
