(1933-) English mezzo-soprano noted for the emotional strength and richness of her interpretations of lieder (musical settings for poems), oratorio, and opera from Purcell to Britten, including a notable Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. She retired from the stage 1981.

(1821-1893) English explorer, in 1864 the first European to sight Lake Albert Nyanza (now Lake Mobutu Sese Seko) in central Africa, and discover that the river Nile flowed through it.
He founded an agricultural colony in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), built a railroad across the Dobruja, and in 1861 set out to discover the source of the Nile. His wife, Florence von Sass, accompanied him. From 1869 to 1873 he was governor-general of the Nile equatorial regions.

(Wilfrid) (1934-) British Conservative politician, home secretary 1990–92. He was environment secretary 1985–86, education secretary 1986–89, and chair of the Conservative Party 1989–90, retaining his cabinet seat, before becoming home secretary in John Major's government.

(Addison), III (1930-) US Republican politician. Under President Reagan, he was White House chief of staff 1981–85 and Treasury secretary 1985–88. After managing George Bush's successful presidential campaign, Baker was appointed secretary of state 1989 and played a prominent role in the 1990–91 Gulf crisis and the subsequent search for a lasting Middle East peace settlement. In 1992 he left the State Department to become White House chief of staff and to oversee Bush's reelection campaign.
A lawyer from Houston, Texas, Baker entered politics 1970 as one of the managers of his friend George Bush’s unsuccessful campaign for the Senate. He served as undersecretary of commerce 1975–76 in the Ford administration and was deputy manager of the 1976 and 1980 Ford and Bush presidential campaigns. Baker joined the Reagan administration 1981 and in 1988 masterminded the campaign that won Bush the presidency. The most powerful member of the Bush team, he was described as an effective “prime minister”.

(Chesney) (1929-1988) US jazz trumpeter. His good looks, occasional vocal performances, and romantic interpretations of ballads helped make him a cult figure. He became known with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet 1952 and formed his own quartet 1953. Recordings include ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘The Thrill Is Gone’.

(1939-) English mathematician whose chief work has been devoted to the study of transcendental numbers (numbers that cannot be expressed as roots or as the solution of an algebraic equation with rational coefficients).
Baker was born in London and studied mathematics there and at Cambridge. He remained at Cambridge, except for many visiting professorships abroad, becoming professor 1974.
In 1966 he extended French mathematician Joseph Liouville's original proof of the existence of transcendental numbers by means of continued fractions, by obtaining a result on linear forms in the logarithms of algebraic numbers. This solution opened the way to the resolution of a wide range of Diophantine problems and in 1967 Baker used his results to provide the first useful theorems concerning the theory of these problems.
Apart from individual papers, Baker’s most important publication is Transcendental Number Theory 1975.
