A Japanese city on western Hokkaido.
Capital of Hokkaido prefecture, Japan; Industries include rubber and food processing. It is a winter sports center and was the site of the 1972 Winter Olympics. Giant figures are sculpted in ice at the annual snow festival.
The university was founded 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College.
