Capital of Texas, on the Colorado River; It is a center for electronic and scientific research.
It is the home of the University of Texas and the Lyndon B Johnson Library and Museum. The state capitol, 308 ft/94 m high, is the largest of any state. Austin was founded 1838 and developed as a stop on the Chisholm cattle-drive trail in the 1860s.

Mary 1868-1934 nee Hunter American novelist

(1793-1836) American pioneer and political leader. A settler in Texas 1821, he was a supporter of the colony's autonomy and was imprisoned 1833–35 for his opposition to Mexican rule. Released during the Texas revolution, he campaigned for US support. After the end of the war 1836, he was appointed secretary of state of the independent Republic of Texas but died shortly afterwards.
Born in Austinville, Virginia, US, Austin grew up in Missouri and followed his father to Texas 1821 where he accepted Mexican citizenship and political privileges in spite of his support of the colony's independence.
The state capital of Austin was named in his honor.

(1790-1859) English jurist. His analysis of the chaotic state of the English legal system led him to define law as the enforceable command of a sovereign authority, thus distinguishing it from other kinds of rules and from morality. His work had a strong impact on jurisprudential thought, though many of his ideas were derived from his friend Jeremy Bentham. He was professor of jurisprudence at the University of London 1826–35.

J(ohn) L(angshaw) (1911-1960) British philosopher, a pioneer in the investigation of the way words are used in everyday speech. His later work was influential on the philosophy of language.
According to Austin’s theory of speech acts, there are three kinds: locutions, or the uttering of meaningful sentences; illocutions, or what one does in saying things, such as stating, promising, urging; and perlocutions, or what one does by saying things, such as persuading, frightening, embarrassing.
His lectures Sense and Sensibilia and How to do Things with Words were published posthumously in 1962.

1st Baron Austin (1866-1941) English industrialist who began manufacturing automobiles 1905 in Northfield, Birmingham, notably the Austin Seven 1921.

(1835-1913) English poet. He published the satirical poem The Season 1861, which was followed by plays and volumes of poetry little read today. He was poet laureate 1896–1913.
