(1856-1924) US architect. He was a leader of the Chicago School and an early developer of the skyscraper. His skyscrapers include the Wainwright Building, St Louis, 1890, the Guaranty Building, Buffalo, 1894, and the Carson, Pirie and Scott Store, Chicago, 1899. He was the teacher of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Other notable works include the Chicago Auditorium.

(Seymour) (1842-1900) English composer. He wrote operettas in collaboration with William Gilbert, including HMS Pinafore 1878, The Pirates of Penzance 1879, and The Mikado 1885. Their partnership broke down 1896. Sullivan also composed serious instrumental, choral, and operatic works—for example, the opera Ivanhoe 1890—which he valued more highly than the operettas.

(rick) (1887-1933) Australian-born US animator and cartoonist. He wrote and drew a newspaper comic strip called “Sammie Johnson”, turned it into a silent animated film 1916, and created the first cartoon-film hero to achieve world fame, Felix the Cat 1920.

(awrence) (1858-1918) US boxer. He won the heavyweight championship from Paddy Ryan 1882 and in the following years toured widely throughout the US and British Isles. In 1892 he lost his title to James “Gentleman Jim” Corbett in the first championship bout held according to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.
Born in Boston, Sullivan briefly attended Boston College before beginning a professional boxing career. After his retirement from the ring, Sullivan became a popular vaudevillian and was a saloonkeeper in New York.

(1892-1949) US psychoanalyst. He was the chief exponent of the dynamic–cultural school of psychoanalysis, which emphasized the role of ongoing interpersonal relationships rather than infantile sexuality in the formation of abnormal behavior.
Although this view incurred considerable criticism from orthodox Freudian psychoanalysts, Sullivan argued that many psychological afflictions were amenable to this approach, including schizophrenia, with which he claimed to achieve considerable therapeutic success.
