(1922-1990) US film actress. She was a sensuous star in such films as The Killers 1946, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman 1951, and The Barefoot Contessa 1954, a tragically slanted Cinderella tale of a Romany girl who becomes an international celebrity. Her later roles include that of Lillie Langtry in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean 1972. She remained active in films until the 1980s, when she retired to London.

(Anna) (1882-1960) US geologist and paleontologist whose work was important for petroleum geologists establishing standard stratigraphic sections for Tertiary rocks in the southern Caribbean.
Julia Gardner was born in South Dakota and educated at Bryn Mawr College and Johns Hopkins University. She worked for the US Geological Survey 1911–54. During World War II, she joined the Military Geologic Unit where she helped to locate Japanese beaches from which incendiary bombs were being launched, by identifying shells in the sand ballast of the balloons.
Her work on the Cenozoic stratigraphic paleontology of the Coastal Plain, Texas, and the Rio Grande Embayment in northeast Mexico led to the publication of Correlation of the Cenozoic Formations of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain and the Caribbean Region 1943 (with two coauthors).

(1840-1924) US art collector. She founded the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, US. As an art collector, she specialized in the works of the Renaissance and of the Dutch masters. Her private art gallery in Boston was opened as a public museum 1903.
Born in New York and educated in Paris, France, she married prominent Boston manufacturer John Gardner 1860. She was participant in the intellectual life of the city but as a tireless world traveler, socialite, and local celebrity, she scandalized Bostonians with her lavish parties and public appearances. She was a patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (founded 1881).

(1959-) Australian motorcycle racer. He gained international recognition in 1984 when he won the British 500 cc and the British Masters titles. In 1987, riding with Honda, he won the World Road Racing Championship (500 cc), 20 points ahead of his nearest rival.

(1889-1970) US author of best-selling crime fiction. He created the character of the lawyer-detective Perry Mason, who was later featured in film and on television. Originally a lawyer, Gardner gave up his practice with the success of the first Perry Mason stories.
