(1799-1860) English archeologist. A wealthy amateur, he discovered several ancient sites of the region of Lycia, Turkey, including in 1838 the ruins of Xanthos, and successfully negotiated with the Turkish government for the purchase of sculptural remains from the site for the British Museum. On his return he was given a knighthood, and a room in the British Museum was named in his honor.
