(1921-) US economist. With Gerard Debreu, he developed mathematical models of the conditions necessary for economic equilibrium, where demand and supply are equal. Nobel prize 1972.
Arrow also made a significant contribution to the development of the economics of social welfare, suggesting that there were logical inconsistencies in attempting to analyze social welfare in terms of individual choices. In addition, he carried out work on uncertainty and decisionmaking in economics, particularly on the effect of learning by doing on productivity.
His works include Social Choice and Individual Values 1951 and Essays in the Theory of Risk-bearing 1971.
