(1913-) Japanese Modernist architect. His works include the National Gymnasium, Tokyo, for the 1964 Olympics with its vast catenary steel roof, and the crescent-shaped city of Abuja, which replaced Lagos as the capital of Nigeria 1992. In 1991 he completed the 70-story City Hall, Tokyo—Japan's tallest building.
Kenso, jap. Architekt, Imabari 4.9.1913, Hauptvertreter des Neuen Bauens in Japan, geschult an den Vorstellungen Le Corbusiers, Prof. für Städtebau an der Universität Tokio. T. entwickelte aus der jap. Tradition Lösungen für moderne Bauaufgaben (Friedenszentrum Hiroshima, 1955/1956; Rathaus Kagawa, 1958) und traditionelle (Kathedrale St. Maria in Tokio, 1965). Entwarf u.a. Stadtbauprojekte für Tokio (1960) und Skopje, Makedonien (1965), war leitend an der Planung der Weltausstellung in Osaka (1970) beteiligt.
