Any member of the people of Eastern Europe or Russian Asia who speak a Slavonic language.
Member of an Indo-European people in central and E Europe, the Balkans, and parts of N Asia, speaking closely related Slavonic languages. The ancestors of the Slavs are believed to have included the Sarmatians and Scythians. Moving west from Central Asia, they settled in E and se Europe during the 2nd and 3rd millennia bc.
The present Slavonic nations emerged around the 5th and 6th centuries ad. By the 7th century they were the predominant population of E and se Europe. During the 9th century they adopted Christianity.
