A(lexander) S(utherland) (1883-1973)
Scottish educationist. In 1924, partially in reaction to his own repressive upbringing, he founded a school, Summerhill, where liberal and progressive ideas such as self-government by pupils and the voluntary attendance of lessons achieved remarkable results, especially with problem children.
