City in central Sri Lanka, on the Mahaweli River; capital of a district of the same name; Products include tea. One of the most sacred Buddhist shrines, the Dalada Maligawa, is situated in Kandy; it contains an alleged tooth of the Buddha.
The city was capital of the kingdom of Kandy 1480–1815, when it was captured by the British. The chief campus of the University of Sri Lanka (1942) is at Peradenia, 5 km/3 mi away.
