(Augustine Aloysius) (1882-1941) Irish writer. He revolutionized the form of the English novel with his “stream of consciousness” technique. His works include Dubliners 1914 (short stories), Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 1916, Ulysses 1922, and Finnegans Wake 1939.
Ulysses, which records the events of a single Dublin day, experiments with language and combines direct narrative with the unspoken and unconscious reactions of the characters. Banned at first for obscenity in the US and the UK, it enjoyed great impact. It was first published in Paris, where Joyce settled after World War I. Finnegans Wake continued Joyce’s experiments with language, attempting a synthesis of all existence

(1912-1991) Australian concert pianist. Her playing combined subtlety with temperamental fire. Her immense repertoire included over 70 works for piano and orchestra. She made her UK debut 1930 and retired in the early 1960s.

(1906-1946) Born in New York, son of a naturalized Irish-born American, he carried on fascist activity in the UK as a “British subject”. During World War II he made propaganda broadcasts from Germany to the UK, his upper-class accent earning him the nickname Lord Haw Haw. He was hanged for treason.
