(1888-1959) US lawyer and politician. Senior US adviser at the founding of the United Nations, he largely drafted the Japanese peace treaty of 1951. As secretary of state 1952–59 he was critical of Britain in the Suez Crisis. He was the architect of US Cold War foreign policy, securing SEATO and US intervention in support of South Vietnam following the expulsion of the French in 1954.
Born in Washington, DC, he was educated at Princeton, the University of Paris, and George Washington University. His specialty as a lawyer was international law. He sought to go beyond the “containment” policy of the time, considering communism as a moral evil with which there could be no compromise. Even so, during his term as secretary of state, he was limited to giving moral support to the Hungarians 1956 when they rose against the Soviets, and Cuba and North Vietnam fell to the Communists during his tenure.

(1893-1969) US lawyer, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) 1953–61. He helped found the CIA 1950. He was embroiled in the Bay of Pigs, Cuba, controversial invasion attempt, among others, which forced his resignation. He was the brother of John Foster Dulles.
