Značenje:
(1759-1794) French revolutionary. Originally a lawyer, during the early years of the Revolution he was one of the most influential people in Paris. He organized the uprising 10 Aug 1792 that overthrew Louis XVI and the monarchy, roused the country to expel the Prussian invaders, and in April 1793 formed the revolutionary tribunal and the Committee of Public Safety, of which he was the leader until July of that year.
Thereafter he lost power to the Jacobins, and, when he attempted to recover it, was arrested and guillotined.

Georges Jacques , Arcis-sur-Aube 28.10.1759, +Paris 5.4.1794, frz. Revolutionär. Von Beruf Rechtsanwalt, begründete mit D. mit C. Desmoulins 1790 die radikale Parteigruppe der Cordeliers und war Mitglied des Konvents und des Wohlfahrtsausschusses. D. war verantwortl. für die sog. Septembermorde 1792 (Massaker an nahezu 3 000 Anhängern der Monarchie) und wirkte bei der Errichtung des Revolutionstribunals 1793 mit. In den folgenden Machtkämpfen unterlag er Robespierre und wurde 1794 hingerichtet. Sein Schicksal gestaltete u.a. Büchner in seinem Drama 'Dantons Tod' (1835).
