Freund und Ratgeber König Heinrichs II., verfocht er nach seiner Investitur die Politik des Papstes gegen den König und wurde daraufhin von vier Rittern während des Gottesdienstes ermordet; schon 1173 heiliggesprochen (Fest: 29.12.). Sein Schicksal ist vielfach literar. gestaltet worden (u.a. Tennyson, T. S. Eliot, Anouilh).
