In biology, any substance (normally a fluid) produced by a cell or specialized gland, for example, sweat, saliva, enzymes, and hormones. The process whereby the substance is discharged from the cell is also known as secretion.
1. A functionally specialized substance (especially one that is not a waste) released from a gland or cell.
2. The organic process of synthesizing and releasing some substance.
