Minute arachnid of the subclass Acari.
Some mites are free-living scavengers or predators. Some are parasitic, such as the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows in human skin, and the red mite Dermanyssus gallinae, which sucks blood from poultry and other birds.
