1. Alert carnivorous mammal with pointed muzzle and ears and a bushy tail; most are predators that do not hunt in packs.
2. The gray or reddish-brown fur of a fox.
One of the smaller species of wild dog of the family Canidae, which live in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Foxes feed on a wide range of animals from worms to rabbits, scavenge for food, and also eat berries. They are very adaptable, maintaining high populations close to urban areas.
Most foxes are nocturnal, and make an underground den, or “earth”. The common or red fox Vulpes vulpes is about 60 cm/2 ft long plus a tail (“brush”) 40 cm/1.3 ft long. The fur is reddish with black patches behind the ears and a light tip to the tail. Other foxes include the Arctic fox Alopex lagopus, the fennec, the gray foxes genus Urocyon of North and Central America, and the South American genus Dusicyon, to which the extinct Falkland Islands dog belonged.

(1833-1893) Canadian-born US spiritual medium. With her sister Katherine, she became famous for her psychic ability. The girls gave public demonstrations of their powers, sparking widespread public interest in spiritualism as a modern religious movement. In 1888 Margaret publicly confessed that her “psychic powers” were a hoax.
Brought up in New York State, US, the sisters moved to New York City 1850 and claimed to be able to communicate with “departed spirits” from an early age.

(1939-) English film actor. He is usually cast in upper-class, refined roles but was celebrated for his portrayal of a psychotic gangster in Nicolas Roeg’s Performance 1970, which was followed by an eight-year break from acting. Fox appeared in The Servant 1963 and Isadora 1968. He returned to acting in No Longer Alone 1978 and other films include Runners 1984, A Passage to India 1984, and The Russia House 1990.

(1624-1691) English founder of the Society of Friends. After developing his belief in a mystical “inner light”, he became a traveling preacher 1647, and in 1650 was imprisoned for blasphemy at Derby, where the name Quakers was first applied derogatorily to him and his followers, supposedly because he enjoined Judge Bennet to “quake at the word of the Lord”.
Fox was born in Leicestershire. He suffered further imprisonments, made a missionary journey to America in 1671–72, and wrote many evangelical and meditative works, including a Journal, published 1694.

(1749-1806) English Whig politician, son of the 1st Baron Holland. He entered Parliament 1769 as a supporter of the court, but went over to the opposition 1774. As secretary of state 1782, leader of the opposition to Pitt, and foreign secretary 1806, he welcomed the French Revolution and brought about the abolition of the slave trade.
