Adopted name of Sean O'Feeney (1895-1973) US film director. Active from the silent film era, he was one of the key creators of the “Western”, directing The Iron Horse 1924; Stagecoach 1939 became his masterpiece. He won Academy Awards for The Informer 1935, The Grapes of Wrath 1940, How Green Was My Valley 1941, and The Quiet Man 1952.
Other films include They Were Expendable 1945, Rio Grande 1950, Mr Roberts 1955, The Last Hurrah 1958, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962. (1586-c. 1640) English poet and dramatist. His play ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore (performed about 1626, printed 1633) is a study of incest between brother and sister.

(1863-1947) US automobile manufacturer. He built his first automobile 1896 and founded the Ford Motor Company 1903. His Model T (1908–27) was the first automobile to be constructed solely by assembly-line methods and to be mass-marketed; 15 million of these automobiles were sold.
Ford's innovative policies, such as a $5 daily minimum wage and a five-day working week, revolutionized employment practices, but he opposed the introduction of labor unions. In 1928 he launched the Model A, a stepped-up version of the Model T.
Ford was born in Dearborn, Michigan, and apprenticed to a Detroit machinist 1878. He worked for the Edison Illuminating Company 1891–99 and then for the Detroit Automobile Company before starting his own firm. Victory in an automobile race at Grosse Point, Michigan, 1901, brought him the publicity he sought, and in 1904 he drove his 999 to a world record of 39.4 sec for 1 mi/1.6 km over the ice on Lake St Clair.
Ford was politically active and a pacifist; he opposed US intervention in both world wars and promoted his own anti-Semitic views. In 1936 he founded, with his son Edsel Ford (1893–1943), the philanthropic Ford Foundation; he retired in 1945 from the Ford Motor Company, then valued at over $1 billion.

(1942-) US film actor. He became internationally known as Han Solo in George Lucas’ Star Wars 1977, playing the role in the rest of the trilogy, and created the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s series of Indiana Jones films 1981–89. Other films include Blade Runner 1982, The Mosquito Coast 1987, Presumed Innocent 1990, and The Fugitive 1993.

(Gwyllym Samuel Newton) (1916-) Canadian-born US actor. He was active in Hollywood from the 1940s to the 1960s. Usually cast as the tough but good-natured hero, he was equally at home in Westerns, thrillers, and comedies. His films include Gilda 1946, The Big Heat 1953, and Dear Heart 1965.

38th president of the US 1974–77, a Republican. He was elected to the House of Representatives 1949, was nominated to the vice-presidency by Richard Nixon 1973 following the resignation of Spiro Agnew, and became president 1974, when Nixon was forced to resign following the Watergate scandal. He pardoned Nixon and introduced an amnesty program for deserters and draft dodgers of the Vietnam War.
Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, was an All-American footballer at college, and graduated from Yale Law School. He was appointed vice president Dec 1973, at a time when Nixon’s reelection campaign was already being investigated for “dirty tricks”, and became president the following Aug. Ford’s visit to Vladivostok 1974 resulted in agreement with the USSR on strategic arms limitation. He was defeated by Carter in the 1976 election by a narrow margin.

English author. He wrote more than 82 books, the best known of which is the novel The Good Soldier 1915. He founded and edited the English Review 1909, to which Thomas Hardy, D H Lawrence, and Joseph Conrad contributed. He excelled at a comic mixture of invention and reportage. He also founded The Transatlantic Review 1924. He was a grandson of the painter Ford Madox Brown.
