Fleshy, many-seeded fruit that does not split open to release the seeds. The outer layer of tissue, the exocarp, forms an outer skin that is often brightly colored to attract birds to eat the fruit and thus disperse the seeds. Examples of berries are the tomato and the grape.
A pepo is a type of berry that has developed a hard exterior, such as the cucumber fruit. Another is the hesperidium, which has a thick, leathery outer layer, such as that found in citrus fruits, and fluid-containing vesicles within, which form the segments.

(Charles) (1926-) US musician. He made his first recording, of the song ‘Maybellene’, at Chess Records in Chicago 1955. Widely promoted by New York disc jockey Alan Freed, it became an early rock-and-roll classic. Recognized as one of the fathers of rock and roll, Berry enjoyed a revival of popularity in the 1970s and 1980s.
Born in St Louis, Missouri, Berry began his musical career as a blues guitarist in local clubs. Berry’s other early tunes, among them ‘Roll over Beethoven’, ‘Rock ’n’ Roll Music’, ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’, and ‘Johnny B. Goode’, featured his trademark guitar solos.
