In biology, abbreviation for antidiuretic hormone, part of the system maintaining a correct salt/water balance in vertebrates.
Its release is stimulated by the hypothalamusin the brain, which constantly receives information about salt concentration from receptors situated in the neck. In conditions of water shortage increased ADH secretion from the brain will cause more efficient conservation of water in the kidney, so that fluid is retained by the body. When an animal is able to take in plenty of water, decreased ADH secretion will cause the urine to become dilute and plentiful. The system allows the body to compensate for a varying fluid intake and maintain a correct balance.
