(1770-1850) A romantic British poet. English Romantic poet. In 1797 he moved with his sister Dorothy to Somerset to be near Coleridge, collaborating with him on Lyrical Ballads 1798 (which included Tintern Abbey). From 1799 he lived in the Lake District, and later works include Poems 1807 (including Intimations of Immortality) and The Prelude (written by 1805, published 1850). He was appointed poet laureate 1843.
Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth, Cumbria, and educated at Cambridge University. In 1791 he returned from a visit to France, having fallen in love with Marie-Anne Vallon, who bore him an illegitimate daughter. In 1802 he married Mary Hutchinson. The Prelude was written to form part of the autobiographical work The Recluse, never completed.
