(1944-) US poet, novelist, critic, and essay writer. She has been active in the US civil-rights movement since the 1960s and, as a black woman, wrote about the double burden of racist and sexist oppression, about colonialism, and the quest for political and spiritual recovery. Her novel The Color Purple 1982 (filmed 1985), told in the form of letters, won the Pulitzer Prize. Her other works include Possessing the Secret of Joy 1992, which deals passionately with female circumcision.
She was born in Eatonton, Georgia, and wrote the novels The Third Life of Grange Copeland 1970, Meridian 1976, and The Temple of My Familiar 1989. Walker’s collections of poems include Once 1968 and Revolutionary Petunias 1973; her short stories and essays are collected in Love and Trouble: Stories of Black Women 1973 and In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose 1983.

His sophisticated guitar technique incorporated jazz idioms and he was one of the first to use an electrically amplified guitar, from the mid-1930s. He was born in Texas but active mainly in California, and often worked with jazz musicians. His recordings include ‘Call It Stormy Monday’ 1946 and the album T-Bone Blues 1960.

(James John) (1881-1946) US public official. In 1925 Walker was elected mayor of New York City and in that position became a popular personality, familiarly known to his constituents as “Jimmy. Although Walker made great improvements to the city’s infrastructure, he was charged with graft and forced to resign 1932.
Born in New York, US, Walker attended St Francis Xavier College and was admitted to the bar 1912. Becoming active in Democratic party politics, he served in the state assembly 1909–15 and the state senate 1915–25, where he became a protégé of Al Smith.
