Traditional dress of the Malay archipelago and the Pacific islands, where it is worn by both men and women. The sarong consists of a piece of fabric, about 4.5–6.4 m/5–7 yd long, which is wrapped around the body and tied at the waist or over the chest. Sarongs became popular fashion garments in the 1940s and 1980s for summer fashion.
