A service used by Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to assign port numbers. RPC doesn’t follow the Well-Known Ports port designations, and only Portmapper is assigned a permanent port number. Because hackers may gain access to portmapper communication, various portmapper security tools are often used to prevent theft of information. See also remote procedure call.
