(1821-1906) Argentine president 1862–68. In 1852 he helped overthrow the dictatorial regime of Juan Manuel de Rosas, and in 1861 helped unify Argentina. Mitre encouraged immigration and favored growing commercial links with Europe. He is seen as a symbol of national unity.
