Cuban dance named for the city of Havana. The most popular dance in Latin America during the 19th century, it was the ancestor of other dance forms, including the Argentinian tango. The habanera is usually in slow duple time (2/4) and uses a variety of standard rhythms. There is a celebrated example in Bizet’s opera Carmen 1875.
