(1890-1922) Irish nationalist. He was a Sinn Féin leader, a founder and director of intelligence of the Irish Republican Army 1919, minister for finance in the provisional government of the Irish Free State 1922 (see Ireland, Republic of), commander of the Free State forces in the civil war, and for ten days head of state before being killed by Irishmen opposed to the partition treaty with Britain.

Wilkie (1824-1889) English author of mystery and suspense novels. He wrote The Woman in White 1860 (with its fat villain Count Fosco), often called the first English detective novel, and The Moonstone 1868 (with Sergeant Cuff, one of the first detectives in English literature).

David Charles (1951-) English pop singer, drummer, and actor. A member of the group Genesis from 1970, he has also pursued a successful middle-of-the-road solo career since 1981, with hits (often new versions of old songs) including ‘In the Air Tonight’ 1981 and ‘Groovy Kind of Love’ 1988. He starred as the train robber Buster Edwards in the film Buster 1988.

(1886-1963) US general. He first came to prominence on Guadalcanal 1942 leading the US 25th Infantry Division, which relieved the US Marines and completed the capture of the island. He then went to Europe and took part in the D-Day landings 6 June 1944 and the subsequent Allied drive through Europe.
After service in New Guinea he went to the UK and took command of VII Corps, with which he assaulted Utah Beach on D-Day. Forces under his command took Cherbourg, closed the Falaise Gap, crossed the Seine, and advanced into Belgium. He commanded a counterattack force during the Battle of the Bulge, then went on to cross the Rhine at Remagen and advanced to meet the Soviet Army at Torgau 25 April 1945.

(1756-1810) British administrator in Australia, first lieutenant governor of Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) 1804–10. He arrived in New South Wales with the First Fleet as judge-advocate of the new settlement and gave a first-hand account of the early days of the colony in the first volume of An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales 1798.

(1932-1993) US blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His distinctive guitar sound was based on open D-minor tuning; calling it “cold blues”, he gave his albums titles such as Frosty 1962, Frostbite 1980, and Cold Snap 1986.
