(1834-1916) Australian astronomer who made detailed observations of the orbits of comets and minor planets over a 50-year period, beginning in 1854, from an observatory he built at his home in Windsor, near Sydney. He published more than 300 scientific papers and was the first person to see the “Great Comet” of 1861 (later named Tebbutt’s comet).
