Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended the Art Students League and illustrated books for other authors. Kenny’s Window 1956 was the first book that he both wrote and illustrated. Very Far Away 1957 and The Sign on Rosie’s Door 1960 soon followed. He also designed several works for the stage, including an operatic version of Where the Wild Things Are and a production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
