(1866-1944) French author and musicologist. He was a leading supporter of pacificism and internationalism. He was associated with Charles Péguy on the influential journal Les Cahiers de la quinzaine/Fortnightly Notebooks where he published his best-known novel cycle Jean-Christophe 1904–12, about a German composer. He also wrote several biographies and critical works, including Michelangelo 1906, Beethoven 1910, and Tolstoy 1911. The Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to him 1915.
He collected his plays as Le Théâtre de la revolution/Theatre of Revolution 1904 and Les Tragédies de la foi/Tragedies of Faith 1913.
