(Vietnam) River in N Vietnam, 500 km/310 mi long, that flows into the Gulf of Tonkin. Its extensive delta is a main center of population.
(US) Either of two rivers in the US. (1) The Red River of the South is a western tributary of the Mississippi River 1,638 km/1,018 mi long; so called because of the reddish soil sediment it carries. The stretch that forms the Texas–Oklahoma border is called Tornado Alley because of the storms caused by the collision in spring of warm air from the Gulf of Mexico with cold fronts from the North. The largest city on the river is Shreveport, Louisiana. (2) The Red River of the North, about 877 km/545 mi long, runs from North Dakota into Manitoba, Canada, and through Winnipeg, emptying into Lake Winnipeg. The fertile soil of the river valley produces large yields of wheat and other crops.
