Adopted name of Lillian Alicia Marks (1910-) English ballet dancer. She danced with Diaghilev’s company 1925–29, was the first resident ballerina of the Vic-Wells Ballet 1933–35, partnered Anton Dolin in their own Markova–Dolin Ballet Company 1935–38, and danced with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo 1938–41, American Ballet Theatre, US, 1941–46, and the London Festival Ballet 1950–52. A dancer of delicacy and lightness, she is associated with the great classical ballets such as Giselle.
She created a number of roles in Frederick Ashton’s early ballets, such as Façade 1931.
