Capital of Amazonas, Brazil, on the Rio Negro, near its confluence with the Amazon; It can be reached by sea-going vessels, although it is 1,600 km/1,000 mi from the Atlantic. Formerly a center of the rubber trade, it developed as a tourist center in the 1970s.
