(1879-1942) Hungarian novelist. Calvinist by upbringing, the leading Hungarian realist of his generation, he wrote about social decay, collision, and conflict within and beyond the family. His first novel Sárarany/Golden Mud 1910 ruthlessly dissects the frustration and bleakness of village life. Later work included monumental historical novels such as the trilogy Erdély/Transylvania 1922–35 and the love story Légy jó mindhalálig/Be Good Till Death 1920.
