(1918-) English-born US actress and film director. As an actress, Lupino won fame playing tough and determined women in thrillers such as High Sierra 1941. Later, while continuing to act, she set up an independent production company 1949, for which she directed several low-budget films during the 1950s, including The Hitch Hiker 1953, an all-male suspense story, and the domestic drama The Bigamist 1953. She was the only woman directing feature films in Hollywood during the 1950s.
