(1899-1962) English actor who became a US citizen 1950. Initially a classical stage actor, he joined the Old Vic 1933. His films include such roles as the king in The Private Life of Henry VIII 1933 (Academy Award), Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty 1935, and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939. In 1955 he directed Night of the Hunter and in 1962 appeared in Advise and Consent.
