(red Mossman) (1887-1987) US public official. As a popular liberal Republican, Landon ran for president against the incumbent F D Roosevelt 1936 but was overwhelmingly defeated. He later accepted a presidential appointment as US delegate to the 1938 Pan-American Conference.
Born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, US, Landon was raised in Kansas and received a law degree from the University of Kansas 1908. After a successful career in business, he entered politics and was elected governor of Kansas 1932. After World War II, Landon became a voice for the elimination of trade barriers and for international development.
