(1835-1882) British economist who introduced the concept of marginal utility: the increase in total utility (satisfaction or pleasure of consumption) relative to a unit increase of the goods consumed.
He became professor of logic and political economy at Owens College, Manchester, 1866, and taught at University College, London, 1876–81.
