(627-680) Second grandson of the prophet Mohammed. He was the son of Ali bin Abu Talib and Mohammed's daughter Fatima. He was murdered at Karbala (modern Iraq), and his death is commemorated every year by Shia Muslims. It is through Husayn and his brother Hasan that Mohammed's descendants trace their lineage.
