(Arabic El Khalil) Town on the West Bank of the Jordan, occupied by Israel 1967; including 4,000 Jews. It has been a front-line position in the confrontation between Israelis and Arabs in the Intifada. In 1994 the Hebron mosque was the scene of a massacre in which 39 Palestinians were shot dead by an Israeli settler while at morning prayer. Within the mosque is the traditional site of the tombs of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
