Cape on the coast of North Carolina, where the waters of the N Atlantic meet the Gulf Stream, causing great turbulence; it therefore is noted for shipwrecks (more than 700 are said to have occurred here) and is nicknamed “the Graveyard of the Atlantic”. Cape Hatteras National Seashore has both natural and historical interest, including a lighthouse and sea life typical of both the temperate and tropical zones.
