(1888-1945) US general and aviator. In 1942 he was placed in command of US forces in the South Pacific and was responsible for the campaigns in the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal. He was appointed to command US Air Forces Pacific Ocean July 1944 with the primary task of organizing the bombing campaign against Japan. He died 1945 when his aircraft disappeared over the sea.
