(1929-) Dutch conductor. He has been associated with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, from 1958, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967; musical director at Glyndebourne 1977–87 and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1987. A noted interpreter of Mahler and Shostakovitch, he also conducted Mozart’s music for the film Amadeus, after the play by Peter Schaffer.
